VBUG's KOB #4 results

Albuquerque’s first snow and ‘real’ cold weather was not enough to keep (most) of the dedicated sand volleyballers away. This 4th KOB before first day of winter packed with 24 players. VBUGs KOB is a great way to allow players from different levels, age groups (between 14 and 50 plus years of age this time around), and locations together on one facility to compete. We started the tourney to remember and a moment of silence one of our friends and volleyballer who passed away recently. I pledged to all the players my commitment to remain available for anyone who needs a hand, or a ear to listen to, especially when times are tough and you feel alone.

I was yet again very impressed with everyone’s level of play. Players continue to improve, games are tighter, and all players battle for their chance to get to the top, and the top 5 spots. It was nice to see some players return to town for the holiday’s and stop by to play, and new players like Aiden (14 year old baler) who was by far my choice for the MVP of the day! Watch out ABQ, if this little buddy of mine continues to grow and play volleyball - we will have one incredible player!

Big kudos goes out to Jeff, Adam, and John for trekking through the snow to attend the tournament; Sam for taking my call at 1 a.m. in the morning of the tournament to fill in for a bailer who (will have to pay extra next time), and all other players who support VBUG and continue to do so in 2013.

Way to go to Drew, Aaron, Marcus (making his debut) and Kurtis for playing in the top 4…

Here is the breakdown for the top 8: full results posted in the home page under KOB ranknigs

1st Drew

2nd Aaron/Marcus

4th Kurtis

5th Jimmy

6th Daniel P.

7th Harris/John

KOB Series #3 results

The November 18th KOB tournament held just after my birthday, seemed determined and adamant to leave me with a belated birthday gift. In the first game of the 2nd round I got my gift. Going up on what I hope was a big block; my little finger was the recipient of powerful spike which resulted in jamming my metacarpal bone (bone below my pinkie finger and in my hand).

I should have taken Larry’s advice and buddy tapped my fingers, or stopped playing, but when does that happen? I continued to play and the swelling and range of motion became progressively worse. I finished well enough to play for the top 4 before my hand became near useless. Playing against Casey (who made his KOB debut), Aaron, and Kurtis was fun. Great playing everyone, it was a nice tourney before turkey day.

The breakdown (full list attached):
1. Casey
2. Aaron
3. Kurtis
4. Harris
5. Drew
6. Larry
7. Jimmy
8. Thomas
Thanks all for making it happen! Looking forward to the next event, scheduled for Sunday, 12/16/12. My hand should be healed by then.

Registration is open for Sunday, 11/18/12 KOB #3

We have our first 16

First 8:. Jeff, Aaron, Drew, Harris, Tod, Kevin, Thomas, Greg
Second. 8:  Larry, Jimmy, Will, Duke, John, Casey, Mark, Bou

TBD
1. Dave?

Note; KOB is registered in increments of 4, if you register you need to show up otherwise it will cause three others to lose their spots :-(  (not cool)

KOB Winter Series #2 results

KOB number two was tons of fun once we got going. We had 28 plus one alternate sign up in advance. Unfortunately and due to injury as well as a number of creative reasons we ended up with 20. After a quick 5 minute re pool, we started nearly on time. Why am I writing about this- we may need to initiate more creative policies to avoid this type of cancellation. People may need to better understand that when we are running a KOB type tourney, one drop can result in 3 others losing their spot- this becomes more critical when the person is doing so at the last minute. Enough of that...It was a fun day of volleyball, people were having so much fun that several of us stayed and played for another hour just to keep it going.

Nice job by John L. to break into the final 4 and Drew for winning KOB #2.The results are posted...here is the top 8 breakdown;
1. Drew
2. Harris/John
4. Jeff
5. Aaron
6. Desi
7. Adam R.
8. Daniel P.

See you at the next one...registration for 11/18 tourney opening soon.

KOB Series #1 Results

Great start to the series everyone. We had 24 players with one sub...this is after the two injuries, and one last minute change. We could have easily ended up with 28. We started the KOB series a month earlier this season to meet demand. This worked out great, as everyone is fit, and ready to play. We noticed the play was already much better for all players. Keep up the great work ABQ...one of our goals is to make this a sought after series, so we continue to pull volleyball friends from other regions to compete. However, the main goal will remain to improve ABQ volleyball and welcome players at every level.

I seeded ranked players from last season according to their total points, and new one's by my best guess. This first series gave everyone an opportunity (after the first round) to get seeded again in the second round. The third round was determined based on those results and players finishes. From here on out, we will move toward the standard format.

Big welcome to the 11 new players...and all the regulars. Thumbs up to Aaron for taking first, and Drew, Daniel L., Chris U., Paul, & Will for playing extra tough.

The complete results are attached under KOB Series...top 8 listed...
1. Aaron
2. Desi
3. Harris
4. Drew
5. Daniel P.
6. Jimmy
7. Chris U.
8. Paul H.

Plan now for the next KOB - schedule for Sunday, 10/21/2012.

A terrific way to end the summer season...great playing, lots of laughs, no issues, good food, cash pay out- what else can you ask for?!

Thanks to all who supported the tourneys, many more to come. Last year, I put together a short video capturing some exciting action from different events. I will try and do something similar this year, so be on the lookout. As most tournaments go, we had last minute changes and additions...ended up with 12 teams battling it on a gorgeous day. We burned through 3 pools of 4 teams in pool play by noon, and started a double elimination with match play on the winners side.

Nice playing to all- special kudos to Dave B. for playing great D. Ben & Jimmy for battling it to the end, my partner Desi for fighting through late in the day leg cramps. Huntington beach tourney 7/14/12

Aloha folks, a ‘little’ late response (I realize) but I’ve been so busy lately that I haven’t had much time, and frankly forgot to post the results. I was able to get around to play a little volleyball (just a little at sneaks league). I seriously feel more than a little sand withdrawal.

The 7/14 tourney had the most number of player and partner changes that I have ever seen. In the end it worked out, we had twelve teams battle it out on the hot sand. After 3 pools of 4 teams, we went to a double elimination with match play in the winner’s side. The winner’s final was a fun game to watch until Adam's quad cramped. As a result, Loric and Adam had to forfeit their game along with the losers final. Nice playing by Jeff and Ben, Bobby & Thomas, Taylor and Mike, and Daniel & Dave. Congrats to the tourney winners Bryan and Jorge. The tournament was a great success, even with the post tourney comments and exchanges :-)

Here is the breakdown:

1. Bryan & Jorge

2. Taylor & Mike

3. Adam & Loric

4. Desi & Larry

5. Jeff & Ben/Daniel and Dave

If anyone recalls the A-Team show quote, "I love it when a plan comes together"...that's how the 6/2 "copacabana" tourney worked out. It was a gorgeous day, Larry and Desi ran the tourney, I ended up getting the thumbs up to play, we ended up with 13 teams, Adam and Tavake played after a hiatus, and we finished before 6 p.m. even with match play/lots of play for everyone.

My left knee still inflamed and hurting, I was hoping my partner (Adam) would be the healthy one. We had a good run until an accident left Adam with limited mobility and a swollen ankle- I think it was okay to move forward and left, but he was unable to move back and right effectively- or something like that. Either way, seven teams went to Gold and six to silver. We paid out top three in both Gold & Silver and provided lunch to all participants (NICE).

Great playing by many people- I notice that Stanley & James and Greg & Kyle played exceptionally well. Way to go to Marcus, Thomas & Bobby for continuing to improve their game.

Here is the breakdown, congrats to all the players and the top finishers.
Gold:
1. Jorge & Mike
2. Harris & Adam
3. Larry & Dave
4. James & Stanley
5. Kelsey & Jessica, Jarrad & Taylor

Cinco De Mayo Tourney 5/5/12

Hola folks, when I referred to our May 5th doubles tournament as “extravaganza” little did I know that it would turn out to be a spectacular day of volleyball, and fun for all. We were happy that we were able to accommodate so many players with partner “hook-ups”, and last minute changes (even morning of event).  I believe it is that persistence and flexibility that has helped VBUG grow the scene.

We started with 5 teams and ended with 14 teams for the tournament on Saturday morning. We were able to use all six indoor sand courts to burn through pool play (quickly). We then moved to a double elimination tourney. We had enough teams to accommodate both Gold and Silver, with Cash prizes for both groups.

Great playing everyone and a big welcome to all the new and veterans who made the Cinco De Mayo tourney a fun event.

Vet & Newbie Tourney 4/14/12

Congrats to Jorge & Paul for taking the 1st and Aaron and G for their second place finish.

The 2nd annual Vet & Newbie tourney date is set. Join us on Saturday, 4/14/2012 for this fun event and our official kick-start to the Spring 2012 season.

The following is an example of the format we’ll follow- tourney will be tailored to number of players... At this time we will hold 18 spots for men and 12 spots for the ladies. Divide players into two groups of 9. The 9 “vets” draw a partner, and then into 3 pools of 3, games to 15?

This tourney starts with ranking our 'Vet' players who register from 1st to Xth player. The Newbies will then draw from a hat and based on the assigned number get partnered with the Vet to play in a set of games (Rd 1), then repeat for another round. We will start to eliminate the bottom from each group after end of round two. This goes on until we have the last four players, two vet and two newbies battling for the finals.

Start: 8:30 check-in , 9 a.m. start
Location: Sneakerz
Cost: $10/player prior to 4/13/12 and $15 day of event.

The first tourney of the year in the new facility was a nice success. I know that January, 2012 had some challenges for everyone's schedule; the players still came through- even with work obligations, illness, and injuries we had 24 players including a few new faces- yet again growing the VBUG family.

Can you believe that only two tourneys remain in the series? Series #5 registration is now open!!!

Series #6 will be a double points tourney with a few fun surprises (more on that later).

Per players request- I created two documents and will post them- First, the points for each event. Next, the results and breakdown per series.

Big proops to Craig for playing solid during Series #4 and coming out with another big win. Looking forward to the next one- hope to see all of you out there soon.

VBUG Winter Series, KOB #4

Registration for KOB #4 series is now open...

Since it's the new year- a quick update to what the series is...

We play a total of 9 games per player (regardless of wins/losses). You don't need a partner since it is a King of the Beach style. Players are ranked by points earned from playing previous tourneys. Usually, the top 2 players from each pool will move up and the bottom two players will move to the silver after first round. The results of the second round dictates if you play 1-4, 5-8, etc. you get the point.

Simply put, this is just lots of play in a short time that is plenty of fun! Cash and prizes for top finishes is a bonus to bragging rights. :-)

Points accrued in all tourney are tallied up (don't worry there are two tourney remaining to get more points) and we will have a season championship on 3/18/12 that is sure to be a great way to jump into the spring 2012 season.

Wave 1: Aaron, Harris, Jeff, ZZ, Tod, Sam, Ryan B., Phil
Wave 2: Craig, Desi, Larry, Daniel P., Nat, Kevin, Dan, Bryan F.
Wave 3: Travis, Adrian, Mike S., Greg
Wait List(next 4 players): Joe,
