VBUG Winter Series #3 12/18 (results)

It's been a very busy week...so sorry about the late post, but better then no post-right. :-)

The results are now posted...just click on the "KOBseries standings" on this page.

The 12/18 tourney was a fantastic way to end the 2011 KOB series and prepare us for the 2012 season. It is really exciting to see all the new players give sand doubles a shot and have a blast. We continue to see improvement in all levels of play. This is great, a true testament to our guiding principles, we encourage new and current players to compete and have fun.

Great job by everyone, this is fast and furious tourney and little time for everyone to sit around and watch others games. But I noticed some really good play from Devin, Adrian, and Nat. Craig took home the trophy, nice playing buddy (told you to come out and play more often).

Just when you think you figured it out, we get a new challenge. Fortunately, we are surrounded with people who are willing to work together to make it all fit together. Thanks for continuing to support 'beach' volleyball in ABQ - a couple of last minute changes- a small bump in the road, and we still managed to start at 9 a.m. as and finish before 1:15 p.m.

KOB #2 had a number of returning vets including nine new players (not new to the game) but new to KOB series. The overwhelming response from the group was that they enjoyed the format and plan to play in the next one!!! Woo Hoo...lets keep growing this event.

A big thank you and Congratulation to all the players. I noticed better playing all around...Kudos to Amy for taking the leap to play on a men's net and play hard...Amy stepped it up and won her first pool. A big "way to go" for Aaron and G. for taking their game to the next level. Big props for some of the newer/returning players who tried doubles and KOB for the first time (Mark/Nat/Ryan J.).

See the results attached... and have a great month, see you for

Appreciate the support from all the players who came out to play and watch the first KOB Winter series held at Charlie's new eight court facility. I was impressed with the number of new faces who made their debut to the doubles scene, job well done (told you it would be fun).

A big "thanks" to Charlies for pleasantly surprising me with having all the court lines and antennas set up for five courts when I arrived before 8 a.m. on Sunday morning.

A flip of the lights, armed with our planned set of brackets (numbers for blind draw), we quickly started as players arrived. It would not be volleyball if we did not have a few last minute surprises (not of the pleasant kind...no shows etc) but we had enough dedicated individuals who came through. A few minor adjustments and we ran the KOB with 20 players who love the game. A near on-time start (9:20 a.m.), we got our warm up and peppering session going and everyone played without a lag for nearly four hours. After facility fees, we paid out 70% of the entry fee and kept 30% for the end of season top points earners...attend all the KOB hint hint...

What went well: Committed players, positive attitude, timely start and finish, lots of volleyball, and mucho interest for the next one scheduled for Sunday, 11/20/11.

What we can improve: Jeff show up with long pants and a jacket at 8:30 a.m. nexts time-shorts and a t-shirt will not cut it in November (thanks for playing through the fever). Everyone, continue to spread the word about KOB event-open to all players novice, intermediate, and 'pro' alike.

VBUG Sandbox Winter Series 2011/2012

New Mexico Volleyball Underground (VBUG) has partnered with Charlie’s Sandbox, for the winter 2011 & Fall of 2012, to provide the VBUG’s Sandbox Winter series.

Last years trip to Denver gave me an opportunity to play with the great folks in the mile high city. I enjoyed playing at the Oasis and the Island so much that we started talking about putting together similar events in Albuquerque.

The challenge was to find a large venue, with lots of courts (4-8 indoor sand courts), that may accommodate indoor sand in the winter. If you are a diehard ‘Volleyballar’ or newer to the game this will certainly be a fun, exciting, and healthy way to spend part of your Sunday.

· Keep your “sand legs” or get new one’s this winter, and only take half your Sunday, and still get to play 9 games guaranteed?

VBUG Sandbox Winter Series...

What is it? Monthly King of the Beach tournament guaranteed Nine (9) games for everyone.
When is it, first tourney Sunday, October 23, 2011 with 8 a.m. check in, 8:30 a.m. start
Where: Charlie’s Sandbox (new location at 6701 Jefferson …

just 1.5 miles from previous location).
Who/What: all levels are welcome, no partner needed. Players will have opportunity to play with new and old partners.
How much: $15 early registration and $20 day of event (first 16 sport are guaranteed- after 16, we will work our way up in increments of 8…(24..32 etc).
Email or call/text me to register…first 8 people to register will get a gift

"Manhattan Beach" Results

Way to go ABQ..., a big thanks to all the players that make NM Volleyball happen. The last scheduled regular same gender VBUG tourney had a great turnout. Even with more than usual last minute additions, changes, and late arrivals we had a nearly on-time start and a decent finish time. 12 men's and eight women's teams battled it out in 90+ degree heat (felt like 110).

We ran a quick pool to allow for double elimination and lots of play for all. With nearly $600 in cash purse the teams had added incentive to prove their skills on the court.

Congratulations to all the players for working hard and having fun. Big props to the winners:

"Long Beach" Tourney results

The first day of Summer arrived with a vengeance. The sun was hot but the players were on fire. The "Long Beach" tourney was a tremendous success, thanks to all the players who made it happen. Over 20 teams registered, my challenge was to promote lots of good play, keep the tourney running, and try to finish at a decent hour (mission accomplished).

The ladies started playing quickly and flew through their pool play. One of the largest turnouts with plenty of new faces. The men were not far behind and by noon, we were already on the second round of the tournament.

See you all on Saturday 8/6/11 with your beach attire for "Manhattan Beach" Tourney

"Sandia - Jitters" results

Albuquerque volleyballers were reintroduced to the southwest heat on Saturday. We quickly remembered the value of keeping hydrated. Two courts for the ladies and three for the men gave us ample time to play plenty of pool play followed by a double elimination tournament with match play in the winners side.

The tournament was filled with plenty of solid and evenly matched teams. In the end, conditioning (an strategies to avoid cramping) played a big role in the days outcomes. Thanks to all the players that came out to support NMVBUG for another successful turnout. An on time start, a smoothly run event, and an almost early finish; I think players were taking longer breaks due to the heat. Thanks players for making this a great event, with lots of play.

Congratulations to Eve & Cristina, and Jorge and Bryan for taking home the win.

1. Eve & Cristina;

Newbie & Vet Results

The first annual Newbie & Vet tournament run by NMVBUG was a tremendous success, even mother-nature helped...a warm day with slight breeze was perfect day for volleyball. The newbies felt welcome and really stepped up their game. The vets were all very accommodating and helped the newbies improve their game. The random draw in each round was a great way to mix and match players. It was a little tricky to start, even with all the preparation, with a few cancellations and a few additions...we had to quickly make some changes--and it was not as fast as we had hoped, but we made up time with the rest of the tournament running smoothly with the assistance of some great friends. 16 men and 14 women seemed to be the perfect number to allow continuous play and very little waiting. I was pleased that the women decided to run their full three rounds of pool play before cumming into a double elimination round.

Thank you players for coming out and making this a successful event. A special thanks to Cristina, Mike, Sam, and ZZ for helping Jeff and I,

The Newbie & Vet tourney is less about results and more about how much fun everyone had. All the Newbies and most of the vets shared that this was a great experience.

4/2/11 Newbie & Vet -

Hey folks, the Newbie Vet tourney is a concept we talked about for years...now that talk has turned into reality...So here is the basic premise (as recommended by fellow TD, Jeff P.) 1. Players divided by experience and relative success. Newbies mean guy/gal who’ve been playing and have a basic understanding (and ability to play doubles) of the game. 2. The following is an example of the format we’ll follow- tourney will be tailored to number of players... At this time we will hold 18 spots for men and 12 spots for the ladies. 3. Divide players into two groups of 9. The 9 “vets” draw a partner, and then into 3 pools of 3, games to 15. In this instance we’ll do the draw 3 times. This means everyone will play 6 games, trading off for a new partner every 2 games. The third round of pool play will be to 21. 4. In this scenario after points are added up the top 6 vets and the top 6 newbies advance. All points are kept because the remaining players draw partners and play in 2 pools of 3, games to 21. The points earned in the first round will be added to those gained by teams in the second round. 5. The top 2 vets and the top 2 newbies advance for a 2 out of 3 final. In the first 6 games a win will be worth 2 points a tie 1 point, and a loss 0. Yes, ties can happen, with a cap at 15, if a team reaches 15 and the opposing team has 14, that team gets one chance to sideout for the tie. The same same goes for games to 21, that is, if the other team has 20, they get one chance to sideout for the tie. Scores from games will be kept as tiebreakers. Second round points will be 4 for a win, 2 for a tie, and 0 for a loss. Clear as mud right...here is what you need to know A. Play at least 6 games with an experienced player, and a lot of play for everyone. It should be interesting and fun B. $10/person prior to 4/2 and $15 day of event (email or text nmzeyaee@gmail.com 259-7317). C. 8 a.m check in, 8:30 start time! D. Scheduled at Sneakerz

3/19 KOB Results, Photos, Video

On a beautiful Albuquerque day, 72 degrees with some clouds and a slight breeze, lots of competitors came out to Sneakerz for the KOB tourney. We had an on-time start, and everyone who was signed up made the tourney and we finished before 5 p.m.. Guaranteed nine games and complimentary custom made sporty Vbunderground hats for everyone encouraged great battles in the final rounds all the way to 1st place and the King of the "Beach" trophy. It may be early in the season but looks like we have plenty of interest, guys are gearing up for the Sandia Classic and players are moving well and mostly in shape. Thanks to everyone who came out to play, helped set up, and the friends and family who arrived to cheer on, make fun off, and have a few laughs with the players. NMVBU - 2010 and Beyond...

A big “Thank You” to everyone who made (contributed, played, helped with…you get the point) the 2010, and first, New Mexico Volleyball Underground (NMVBUG) season a success. With one tournament per month, we averaged a respectable turnout for most events.
We are gearing up for the 2011 season and talks are underway for some incredible changes. Our priority remains to grow and improve Volleyball in New Mexico. We want to do this by maximizing turnout and invite former and newer players to the game of Beach Volleyball. We recognize that one of the challenges is to find partners to play with. Volleyball players tend to be known to cancel last minute, break ankles (or at least prone to unique injuries), and occasionally go on drinking binge- perhaps the cause of the unique injuries. Unfortunately, we are unable to provide Growth Hormone to the players and we can’t shoot your partner for canceling. However, we will make our blog and facebook site player friendly by helping to partner people up, as well as list singles looking for volleyball partners for the upcoming tourneys.
We encourage new, experienced, and professionals to join us for our events and build NM volleyball, while making it lots of fun. We look forward to a healthy and successful season (NM rocked Aspen in 2010) and our new home (Sneakerz) is sure to provide a friendly volleyball atmosphere for all skill levels so we can rock Aspen once again.
Look for our first King & Queen of the Beach tourney in Mid-March…let’s get our sand legs in order!
